Gundam SEED Freedom box office: Japan yen total and worldwide
The 2024 Gundam SEED film opened at number one in Japan and is almost entirely a Japanese box office story.

Short answer: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom had earned a cumulative 5,222,894,120 yen in Japan (about US$33.80 million at Anime News Network's conversion) as of a November 2024 report. The Numbers lists $34,729,843 in Japan, reported February 5, 2025, and $35,421,262 worldwide. Japan accounts for nearly all of it.
How much has Gundam SEED Freedom earned in Japan?
Anime News Network's report on the film's second special edition opening states that the film had earned a cumulative total of 5,222,894,120 yen, about US$33.80 million. The report appeared in November 2024. The film opened in Japan on January 26, 2024.
The Numbers shows $34,729,843 for Japan with a report date of February 5, 2025. That figure is in US dollars and is broadly consistent with the yen total, though the two use different dates and exchange rates.
How did it open?
AniTrendz reported that the film opened at number one on the Japanese weekend chart for January 26 to 28, 2024, with about 634 thousand moviegoers and 1.06 billion yen (about US$7.2 million, its conversion).
AniTrendz attributes to the film's official website the claim that this was the Gundam franchise's best opening gross. That is a claim by the rights holder's site, not an independent ranking.
What about outside Japan?
The Numbers lists $35,421,262 as the international total, with Domestic listed as n/a, so Japan is roughly $34.7 million of it. Other territories on the page are small: South Korea $493,093, Australia $125,594, the United Kingdom $47,360, New Zealand $13,598 and the Netherlands $11,774. Several of those have report dates in 2024.
Fathom Events ran a US special engagement on May 7, 2024. The Numbers does not give a US gross for it.
Where public evidence stops: We did not find a final lifetime yen total after the November 2024 report, or an official worldwide figure. The 5.22 billion yen number is a cumulative figure on a stated date, not necessarily the end of the run. The Numbers' worldwide total mixes report dates from 2024 to 2026.
What do these figures not show?
These are ticket-sales figures for theatrical runs, including special editions in Japan. They do not show what Sunrise or the production committee earned, and they exclude home video, streaming and the plastic model business tied to the franchise.
