Global anime market data: the ¥3.84 trillion industry in 2024
The official AJA figures show a record market, but the headline number covers many different businesses, not just anime studios.

Short answer: The Association of Japanese Animations estimates that the global anime market reached ¥3.8407 trillion in 2024, an increase of 14.8% year over year. Overseas anime business reached ¥2.1702 trillion, up 26.0%, while the domestic Japanese market reached ¥1.6705 trillion, up 2.8%. A separate, narrower measure of commercial anime production company revenue reached ¥466.2 billion, up 9.1%.
How big is the global anime market in 2024?
The Association of Japanese Animations estimates that the broad anime market reached ¥3.8407 trillion in 2024. That is the highest value on record and represents year-over-year growth of 14.8%, the second-fastest annual increase after 2019's 15.3%.
This broad market figure is an estimate of total consumer spending and business activity related to anime. It includes television, theatrical film, home video, internet distribution, merchandise, music, live entertainment, amusement machines, and international business. The same report also tracks a narrower production-company market, which was ¥466.2 billion in 2024.

Overseas revenue has overtaken domestic revenue
For the first time, overseas anime revenue exceeded domestic revenue by a wide margin in 2024. The overseas market grew 26.0% to ¥2.1702 trillion, while the domestic market grew 2.8% to ¥1.6705 trillion. The gap between overseas and domestic widened from ¥97.9 billion in 2023 to ¥499.7 billion in 2024.
The growth is driven by global streaming distribution, international licensing, theatrical releases, merchandise, and live events. AJA chair Kazuko Ishikawa stated that anime has become a core pillar of Japan's cultural and economic exports.
The two market measures answer different questions
The broad ¥3.84 trillion figure measures spending around anime. The narrower ¥466.2 billion figure estimates revenue received by commercial anime production companies. A streaming subscription, licensed figure, or overseas distribution deal can contribute to the surrounding anime economy without flowing directly or completely to the studio that animated the title.
This is why the global anime market size cannot be treated as studio revenue. The broad market was more than eight times the measured production-company market in 2024.
Where regional breakdowns are and are not available
AJA publishes a global total and a Japan versus overseas split, but it does not release a public country-by-country or region-by-region breakdown of the ¥2.17 trillion overseas market. Industry observers must therefore rely on other sources for regional estimates.
Commercial market research firms estimate regional anime market sizes using different scopes and methods. For example, Grand View Research estimated the U.S. anime market at USD 2.59 billion in 2024, while Cognitive Market Research estimated Latin America at USD 1.44 billion in 2023 and the Middle East and Africa at USD 0.86 billion in 2023. These figures are not directly comparable to AJA's overseas total because they use different definitions, currencies, and year bases.
Methodology note: AJA's broad market is measured in yen and includes multiple revenue categories. Commercial research firms often measure narrower categories such as streaming services or merchandising in U.S. dollars. Do not add these estimates together and present the result as a single authoritative total.
What official targets say about future growth
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has set a target to grow the overseas anime market from roughly ¥2.1 trillion in 2024 to ¥6 trillion by 2033. That target is part of a broader government goal to increase overseas content sales across anime, manga, games, music, and live-action film from ¥6.1 trillion to ¥20 trillion over the same period.
METI's strategy includes tax incentives and budgetary support for production and promotion of Japanese intellectual property, expansion of distribution platforms, and localization support. Whether these targets are achieved depends on market demand, production capacity, and the ability to sustain creative quality at scale.
