Anime Industry Report 2025: the ¥3.84 trillion market, explained
The latest AJA data shows overseas demand pulling farther ahead of Japan. But the headline market number is not what anime studios earned.
Published: 2026-07-31. Updated: 2026-07-31.
Short answer: The Association of Japanese Animations estimates that Japan's broad anime market reached ¥3.8407 trillion in 2024, up 14.8%. Overseas business supplied 56.5% of that market. A separate, narrower measure of commercial anime production-company revenue reached ¥466.2 billion. Those figures answer different questions and should not be used interchangeably.
How big is the anime industry?
The latest official answer is ¥3.8407 trillion for 2024. That is the broad end-user market: an estimate of what consumers and overseas buyers paid across television, film, home video, streaming, merchandise, music, live entertainment, amusement machines, and international business.
AJA reports that the broad market added ¥494.2 billion in one year. The resulting anime industry market size for 2024 was 2.1 times its 2015 level and 3.5 times its 2002 level.

Why other market-size pages disagree: Commercial research firms use different geographies, categories, exchange-rate dates, and forecasting methods. AnimeSignal keeps AJA's yen figures and definitions intact instead of blending incompatible estimates.
Two markets hide behind one headline
The broad figure follows spending around anime. The narrower ¥466.2 billion figure estimates revenue received by commercial anime production companies. A streaming subscription, licensed figure, or overseas distribution agreement can contribute to the surrounding anime economy without flowing directly or completely to the studio that animated a title.
This is why an anime industry revenue headline cannot be treated as studio revenue. The broad market was more than eight times the measured production-company market.
Overseas demand now makes up 56.5%
International business reached ¥2.1702 trillion, increasing 26.0% in 2024. The domestic market reached ¥1.6705 trillion, increasing 2.8%. The gap between them widened from ¥97.9 billion in 2023 to ¥499.7 billion in 2024.
AJA connects that expansion to global streaming and broader international exploitation of anime rights. Netflix, Disney+, and Crunchyroll are named in the report's discussion, but the report does not assign a disclosed contribution to each platform.
Is the anime industry growing? Yes, unevenly
The market reached a record for the third consecutive year, but not every category moved in the same direction. Merchandise remained the largest measured domestic category at ¥748.8 billion. Internet distribution reached ¥265.5 billion, overtaking television, film, and home video combined.
The cleaner conclusion is not simply that anime is booming. International demand and rights exploitation are growing quickly, while production capacity and economics remain under pressure.
Broad end-user market categories reported by AJA for 2024.| Broad-market category | 2024 value | Year over year |
|---|
| Merchandising | ¥748.8B | +6.8% |
| Internet distribution | ¥265.5B | +6.2% |
| Live entertainment | ¥122.5B | +13.3% |
| Television | ¥98.2B | +0.9% |
| Film | ¥69.0B | +1.3% |
Why record demand does not remove studio pressure
AJA's survey responses name rising production costs, rising labor costs, and human-resource shortages among the industry's most common concerns. The report also says larger production companies are better positioned to earn rights and royalty income, while many small and mid-sized companies remain more dependent on production fees.
That leaves the industry with two truths at once: the audience and surrounding market are expanding, but the companies responsible for making anime do not capture that value equally.
