Anime home video rights guide: Blu-ray, DVD, and digital ownership
Home video was once the most profitable anime window after TV, but it has shrunk dramatically while streaming has expanded.

Short answer: Anime home video rights are the rights to sell or rent anime on physical media such as Blu-ray and DVD, or through digital purchase and rental platforms. The Japan Video Software Association reported that Japan's domestic anime home video market fell 31% in 2025 to ¥18.7 billion, with sales down 34% to ¥16.3 billion. Streaming video-on-demand revenue among JVA members, by contrast, rose 48% from 2024.
What are anime home video rights?
Home video rights allow a distributor to release an anime series or film on Blu-ray, DVD, or digital download and rental platforms. These rights are usually sold separately from streaming and theatrical rights and can be split by territory and language.
The AJA Anime Industry Report 2025 classifies home video, or 'video,' as one of the four footage-based versions of anime, alongside TV, film, and streaming. In recent years, streaming has overtaken the combined value of the other three video categories in Japan.

Who licenses anime home video rights?
In North America, Right Stuf was a leading anime home video retailer and label before its acquisition by Crunchyroll. A PR Newswire announcement of the 2022 acquisition noted that Right Stuf 'also offers licensed anime home video product through its own label.' The Right Stuf store was later absorbed into the Crunchyroll Store.
In Japan, Pony Canyon and other music and video distributors handle physical releases for many anime titles. Toei Animation's Film segment, which includes home video, generated ¥31.2 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2026.
Why home video still matters
Even as the market shrinks, home video remains important for collectors and for releases that include bonus content not available on streaming. Manufacturers have responded by packing more episodes per release, raising the average sales price per unit by 35% over the last decade, according to the JVA survey.
Home video can also serve as a long-tail revenue source after the streaming window ends. A title may move from exclusive streaming to wider availability, including physical and digital purchase, once its initial license expires.
No undisclosed price claims: AnimeSignal does not publish unverified per-title home video licensing fees. The JVA aggregate survey and studio segment reporting are the most reliable public sources.
Digital transactional rights
Digital purchase and rental rights are increasingly treated as part of the home video window. Platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play sell episodes or seasons for permanent ownership or for rental.
These rights are usually licensed separately from subscription streaming. A distributor that holds Blu-ray rights may or may not also hold digital transactional rights, depending on the contract.
